MAKING A DIFFERENCE

      Sam and Diane Cave are the owners of Cave & Associates, Ltd. For the last 10 years, they have taken a winter vacation in Guatemala. They see face to face the poverty that Americans usually only read about. They personally know kids who live with parasites in their stomachs from sleeping on the bare ground. Many have no parents able to help them, and no chance to go to school. Some worry constantly about their next meal which often comes from a bag of garbage.

      Sam and Diane volunteer at an orphanage near Antigua. It is called NPH (the spanish initials for Our Little Brothers and Sisters.) They worry about what happens to the kids after they leave. A few get scholarships to go to college. Many more get jobs like their godchild, Jose, who delivers 5 gallon jugs of water door to door. Jose gets by because he can read and write, thanks to NPH, but he may not be able to send his own kids to school. In order to help break the cycle, Sam & Diane offered to teach the kids English. English will enable the kids to get jobs that pay a decent wage like waiters, bilingual secretaries, hotel workers, travel guides, taxi drivers at the airport, etc. The English program grew from 5 kids 7 years ago to all 380 kids at the orphanage. Even the babies now have Sesame Street programs available to watch. The hope is when they get to school they will be able to pronounce English sounds and learn English faster.
